Tiger JV beats Nevada, 26-8

Fort Scott High's junior varsity football team defeated Nevada, 26-8, Monday night at Frary Field in its season opener.

After a scoreless first quarter, Josh Hawkins put the Tigers on the board with an 80-yard touchdown reception from Ben Gettler with 4:48 left in the second. Kaleb Simpson ran in the two-point conversion.

Just about a minute later, Gettler hit Griffon Knopp on a 40-yard scoring strike to make it a 14-0 game after a failed two-point conversion.

Cody Cannon scored on a 52-yard run with 7:49 left in the third to put Fort Scott up 20-0. Logan Fancher hauled in a five-yard scoring pass from Gettler with 7:57 left in the contest.

Nevada's only score came with 5:07 to go when Kyle Burchell scored on a four-yard run. Trevor Humbholz scored the two-point conversion.

Other highlights included the Tigers' goal-line stand on fourth-and-one at their own two yard line early in the second that kept Nevada from getting on the scoreboard first, Blake Cowen's recovery of a muffed punt with 44 seconds left in the second and Zach Riley recovering a fumbled kickoff in the third.

Fort Scott hosts Independence Monday. The freshmen will play first at 5 p.m. with the JV beginning at around 7 p.m.
