Uniontown Ruritan installs new officers

Friday, January 11, 2008

In the absence of president Matt Wood, the December meeting of the Uniontown Ruritan Club was called to order at 7 p.m. Dec. 18 in the Fellowship Hall of the United Methodist Church by vice-president Lawrence George.

Dale Jackson led the club in the singing of "America." The invocation was voiced by David Kuns. Twenty-one members and guests were present. The theme for the evening was Ladies Night. A delicious meal was served by the United Methodist Women and appreciation was expressed by Lawrence "Bugs" George.

The minutes of the November 19 meeting were approved as received by mail and distributed to club members. The treasurer's report was given by Chad Holt. A balance of $292.95 was approved for the club's operating fund. A balance of $2,998.35 was approved for the club's foundation fund.

Committee reports were also given. Jake Underwood reported that cases of fruit were recently distributed to 129 area residents who are 65 years of age or older, or disabled. A total of 11 cases of oranges, four cases of grapefruit, and five cases of apples were distributed to residents.

Thank-you notes for the Christmas fruit were presented by Theda Headley, Bonita Holeman, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Nelson, Mr. and Mrs. Elwin Ermel, and Willis Reynolds and family.

The installation of officers for 2008 also took place, with Lawrence "Bugs" George being named president, Dale Jackson named as vice-president, Raymond "Skeet" George as secretary, Chad Holt as treasurer, and Ed Hartman as a board of directors members. All appointments were approved.

During the club's program, George Warren served as chairman and intended to have Allison Warren play tunes on the violin, but the music had been misplaced for both the violin and the piano.

George had also asked Rebecca Stufflebeam to perform musical numbers for the program, saying that she had performed musical numbers during the Good Ol' Days. She performed vocal numbers and they were very good.

A rare fact was noted that the Uniontown Ruritan Club currently has four members who are brothers; Raymond "Skeet" George, Marion George, Lawrence "Bugs" George, and Joe George.

The club participated in the flag salute before adjourning. A motion to adjourn was made by Raymond "Skeet" George, seconded by Dale Jackson and carried. The January 2008 meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Methodist Church Annex.
