Tigers slip, fall to Independence in Sub-State matchup

Wednesday, March 4, 2020

For three quarters of play Wednesday night, it appeared the Fort Scott Tiger boys’ basketball team finally had Independence’s number this season.

However, a hot fourth quarter for the No. 5 seeded Bulldogs (14-7) catapulted Independence to a 51-40 win over the No. 12 seeded Tigers (7-14) in a Class 4A Sub-State matchup in Independence. The Bulldogs’ senior Jaden McGrath, who Fort Scott kept quiet in the first half, came on strong in the second half to finish with a game-high 20 points. McGrath, the team’s leading shooter, scored all of his points in the second half, including 16 in the final frame.

The Tigers held a lead after each of the first three quarters, including a 10-point lead after the third.
