Uniontown splits with Marmaton Valley
UNIONTOWN — Uniontown’s basketball teams opened the season here Friday night with a split against rival Marmaton Valley in a Three Rivers League doubleheader.
Uniontown girls won 45-34 as Karleigh Schoenberger led the way with 13 points. Danielle Young added 8 points to the total. Breleigh Harris handed out 6 assists and Danielle Howard was credited with 4 steals.
“Early foul trouble took us out of our game plan, but several girls stepped up when we needed them the most,” Uniontown head coach Dustin Miller said. “Shots that were not falling early in the game found their way through the hoop in the fourth.”
Eagle boys fell to Marmaton Valley 49-43. A 3-point second quarter was a factor in the loss but Uniontown did attempt to rally, scoring 21 in the fourth.
“We showed some toughness and grit tonight,” Eagle head coach Jeremy Neville said. “There are always things you should do better, but we did a good job of moving the ball and cutting to open areas. They pressed us early and we handled ourselves pretty well. The guys are a little disappointed in their free throw shooting. Twelve for 31 is tough to swallow.”
Luke George and Cade Goodridge scored 11 points each for the Eagles.
Both Uniontown teams will take part in the Humboldt Tournament beginning Tuesday.
