FSCC men drop two at Mineral Area, beat Southwestern JV

Tuesday, November 27, 2018

Fort Scott Community College’s men have seven losses this season, all of which have come to NJCAA Division I competition. They also have four wins, all of which have been over four-year schools’ junior varsity teams.

Over the weekend, the Division II Greyhounds lost a pair of games to Division I schools at a weekend affair at Mineral Area, Mo. The Greyhounds have not yet played a Division II team this season.

Fort Scott beat the Southwestern College JV, 73-38, Tuesday night at Arnold Arena.

Monday: Fort Scott 73, Southwestern JV 38.

The Greyhounds came out early and tried to bomb the Moundbuilders out with 3-point shots. The problem was that they weren’t falling and it seemed as if they forgot that they could switch up and try the inside.

“We can’t keep playing down to our competition,” Fort Scott head coach Michael Cook said. “Yes, they’re a JV team but we should have learned something from playing against Vincennes and playing against Mineral Area.

“We’re still doing the same silly, stupid mistakes. When we play down to our competition, we end up with 20 turnovers instead of just running out stuff and executing.”

Up only 10-6 early, the Greyhounds finally got on track five and a half minutes into the game, going on a 13-0 run.

Fort Scott also outscored Southwestern 8-0 in the last two minutes to go into the half with a 34-13 advantage.

It took some time for the ’Hounds to get going again in the second half. After a little more than seven minutes, the Builders had already matched the number of points they had in the entire first half while Fort Scott had only scored 11.

“We’re becoming creatures of habit,” Cook said. “We’re doing the same things over and over again. I think you could hear me telling them to move the ball. We didn’t run our press break well at all because we’d rather get dunks and make threes.

“I had to tell them to stop shooting threes — we were at 11 percent and they didn’t have any height — and let’s go inside.”

A 12-0 run during which the Greyhounds made six consecutive shots from the field made it 67-33 with 3: 32 to go.

The final totals saw Fort Scott at 52 percent from the field, making 32 of 61 field-goal attempts but only 2 of 12 from 3-point range.

Craig Jordan led Fort Scott with 17 points while Aaron Williams came off the bench to add 14. Andre Nelson had 12 points and 15 rebounds for the ’Hounds.

Southwestern shot 27 percent on 14 of 51 for the game after making only four field goals the entire first half. None of the Moundbuilders reached double figures.

Fort Scott dominated the boards, 48-23. Travis Zeno handed out 6 assists.

The Greyhounds host the Park University JV Friday night at 7.

Friday: Mineral Area, Mo., 85, Fort Scott 79.

Jordan and Zeno scored 13 points each for the Greyhounds in their loss to Mineral Area (8-1). Nelson, Jeremiah August and Tanner Lackey added 11 points each and Evan Mitchell finished with 10.

Patrick Strzala led the Cardinals with 19 points, connecting five times from behind the 3-point line. Steve Wooten added 18 points off the bench as he made 6 of 6 shots from the field.

Mineral Area made 53 percent of its shots form the floor, making 32 of 60 field-goal attempts. Fort Scott shot 49 percent on 32 of 66.

Saturday: Vincennes, Ind., 89, Fort Scott 52.

The Trailblazers (9-0), ranked No. 6 in NJCAA Division I, shot 51 percent from the field on 32 of 63, outrebounded the Greyhounds 45-20 and blocked 9 shots on their way to the win.

Zeno and Jordan scored 13 points each for Fort Scott, which was held to 34-percent shooting on 19 of 56 and made only 2 of 11 3-point attempts.

Lony Francis led Vincennes with 20 points as he connected on 9 of 10 field-goal tries. Keith Clemons added 17 with the aid of 5 3-pointers.
