George, Atchison return with State medals

WICHITA — Uniontown’s Ben George and Northeast’s Jasper Atchison returned from the Kansas State Track and Field Championships with medals. The meet was held at Wichita State University Friday and Saturday.

Atchison won his medal on Friday, finishing in eighth place in the Class 3A boys’ 3,200-meter run in 10:16.20. Owen Pearce of Kingman was the winner in 9:35.45.

George won his medal on Saturday as he took sixth in Class 2A boys’ triple jump. His best leap covered a distance of 41 feet, 10 inches. Jacob Rein of Macksville was the champion at 45’ 1 1/2”.

Atchison also competed in the 110-meter hurdles for Northeast. He finished in 12th place in Friday’s preliminaries in 15.83 seconds and did not advance to Saturday’s final.

Kenneth Atchison was Northeast’s only other competitor, clearing 5’ 10” in Class 3A high jump. Tyus Wilson of Sterling was the winner at a height of 6’ 6”.

George also competed in 2A high jump, finishing 12th with a height of 5’ 10”. Alex Burton of Claflin-Central Plains was the winner at 6’ 6”.

Uniontown’s Sammie Hampton finished 14th in 2A girls’ javelin on Saturday with an effort of 108’ 6”. Mareli Salazar of Wichita County won the championship with a mark of 133’ 6”.

Paige Mason finished 16th on Friday for Uniontown in Class 2A girls’ high jump at 4’ 6”. Skyler Saunders of Blue Rapids-Valley Heights won the championship at 5’ 4”.
