Five champs for area schools at TRL Relays

PLEASANTON —Five area athletes won events at the Three Rivers League Relays held here Thursday.

Northeast sophomore Daniel Balk successfully defended his title in pole vault as he cleared 10 feet, 6 inches, winning by a foot.

Sophomore Carlee Beard of Northeast won two events. She had a throw of 97 feet even in discus to win by two inches and a mark of 32’ 1” in shot put to win by almost a foot and a half.

Northeast’s Brittney Wyland won high jump on a tie-breaker at 4’ 6” after tying with four others, including Uniontown’s Paige Mason, who was placed fourth.

Uniontown’s Ben George claimed the boys’ high jump title as he cleared six feet even and won a tie-breaker over Northeast’s Kenneth Atchison, who was placed second, and Jayhawk-Linn’s Brandon Gray.

Southeast won the girls’ team title in its first season in the TRL, scoring 122 points. Marmaton Valley was runner-up with 101 points. Northeast finished fifth with 49 points and Uniontown was eighth with 23.

Yates Center defended the boys’ team championship, scoring 95 points to beat Jayhawk-Linn by one point. Northeast was fourth with 65 points while Uniontown was eighth with 31.

In total, Northeast girls won eight medals while the boys won 11. Uniontown’s girls and boys each on seven medals.

Regional meets are next for both schools. Northeast will compete in a Class 3A meet at Fredonia while Uniontown will go to Leon for a Class 2A Regional at Bluestem. Both meets will be held Friday, May 18.
