Softball finally gets on field, sweeps

Friday, April 6, 2018

Fort Scott High School’s softball team was the last one in the Southeast Kansas League to finally play. And the Tigers released some frustration Thursday when they swept rival Pittsburg by scores of 12-2 and 9-2 in a league twinbill at Lions Field.

Contrast the Tigers’ schedule to Chanute’s. The Blue Comets got to open their season on time on March 15 and have already played six games. Coincidentally, the only games the Comets haven’t played were the ones that were supposed to take place in Fort Scott’s home tournament on March 27. That’s been rescheduled for April 16.

The Tigers cranked out 13 hits in the opener. Kenady Poyner had four of them, including a double and a triple. Mia Bryant was 3 for 3 and drove in 3 runs. Aubrey Ard was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI. Madie Farmer was 2 for 3 and drove in 3 runs. Lexi Milburn also had 2 RBI.

Lane Bohlken allowed 2 hits and 4 walks while striking out 2 as she went all five innings.

Fort Scott had 14 hits in game two, which included a 2-run, over-the-fence home run for Bryant in the sixth inning.

Farmer was 3 for 4 at the plate while Bryant was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI. Poyner and Bohlken had 2 hits each. Sami Bradbury drove in 2 runs.

Bryant pitched the first 3 innings, allowing no earned runs on 5 hits and 2 walks with one strikeout. Lexi Milburn took over with runners on base in the top of the fourth and allowed just 2 hits while striking out 7.

Fort Scott plays a league doubleheader Tuesday at Parsons.
