Goblins sweep Tigers in Willard finale

WILLARD, Mo. — Harrison (Ark.) swept Fort Scott High School’s basketball teams in the final round of the Willard Tri-State Classic here Saturday. Goblin girls took a 44-39 win while Harrison’s boys prevailed, 60-32.

Both Fort Scott teams finished the tournament 0-3 and will be off all this week before resuming play with a Southeast Kansas League doubleheader at Chanute on Dec. 12.

Madison Cook and Skyelar Brown were named to the All-Tournament Team for Fort Scott’s girls. Jessie Jones and Jessie Lawrence were named for Tiger boys.

Girls: Harrison 44, Fort Scott 39.

Cook scored 28 points for the Tigers, half coming at the free-throw line. Fort Scott led 7-4 early after Cook scored consecutive baskets. But Harrison scored 10 of the final 12 points to take a 14-11 lead after one.

The Goblins (2-2) led the entire second quarter but Cook’s back-to-back scores in the final 40 seconds allowed the Tigers to go into the locker room with a 22-22 tie. Cook also scored about two minutes into the third to put Fort Scott ahead again.

Harrison scored 6 of the last 8 of the period but Cook’s free throws with 37 seconds left found the Tigers down just one, 31-30, going into the final stanza.

The fourth quarter went almost three minutes without a score before Jenny Denton gave Fort Scott the lead with 5:18 left. Cook’s free throws with 3:15 remaining have the Tigers the lead for the last time, 34-33.

Fort Scott scored only one more field goal the rest of the game. Caroline Cecil put Harrison ahead for good with two free throws with 3:30 to go and Claire Doshier extended the lead with a 3-point basket.

Cook brought the Tigers within 38-37 with 2:09 left with a pair of free throws. She also brought them within 40-39 when she stuck back her own missed shot with 1:30 to go.

Harrison scored the last 4 points, including a transition basket by leading scorer Briley Parker off her own steal. Parker led the Goblins with 16 points followed by Doshier with 11.

Boys: Harrison 60, Fort Scott 32.

The Tigers were competitive early with Matt Campbell’s basket bringing them within 8-7 midway through the first quarter. But Harrison (4-1) scored the final 16 points of the period to go up 24-7.

The Goblins led 35-18 at the half. They also scored 11 of the first 13 of the third, making it 46-20.

Jones led the Tigers with 13 points. The Goblins kept Lawrence out of the scorebook after he had scored 27 points in the first two games of the tournament.

Skyler Young led Harrison with 23 points, followed by Colton Youngblood with 17 as he connected on four 3-point goals.
