Barbara Ann Schweppe Hanes, 83, formally of Fort Scott died at her home in Walnut Village in Anaheim, Calif., following a short illness. Barbara was born in Chillicothe, Mo., the daughter of John Thomas and Vera Cleveland Schweppe on June 9, 1934. She came to Fort Scott with her parents a young girl when her father, an International Harvester agency representative, became part owner of the Fort Scott Truck and Tractor Company. Her mother was well known as the city clerk from 1953 until retirement in 1975. Barbara was a graduate the Fort Scott High School Class of 1952.

Barbara married Alfred C. Hanes, a graduate of FSHS Class of 1947, on Nov. 5, 1953, in Riverside, Calif., where Alfred served in the U.S. Air Force. They lived in several locations in the States and also in Germany. Following his service, they returned to Riverside, where Alfred worked in the aerospace industry and died Feb. 21, 1996. When living in Europe, Barbara served as an education advisor and social worker for Armed Forces Europe.

Barbara later worked for 35 years in administration and social work for Orange County, Calif. Following retirement she enjoyed traveling making numerous trips to Europe with friends. She also enjoyed classical music, theater, movies, singing in a senior chorus, playing tennis and served as a volunteer social worker assisting injured adults and others in need. Her varied interests, positive attitude, generous spirit, and willingness to help others were recognized by all who knew her.

As a longtime member of the Fullerton, Calif., First Presbyterian Church, a memorial service was held in her honor on Aug. 30, 2017. Her remains were returned for internment with her husband Alfred, Sept. 5, 2017, in the Fort Scott National Cemetery.
