Brooks claims Regional 3,200 title; 5 events to State

Tuesday, May 23, 2017

PAOLA — Fort Scott High School will have five entries in the State Track and Field Championships at Wichita this weekend and had two more athletes who missed qualifying by slim margins.

In all, Tiger girls medaled in six events and qualified three to State from the Paola Class 5A Regional Meet on Friday. The boys have Devin Brooks going to State in two events and had four other medalists.

The top six finishers in each event earned medals. The top four qualified for State.

Devin Brooks advances in two events and is the only Fort Scott male athlete who will advance. He won the 3,200-meter run and finished fourth in the 1,600.

Brooks’ time in the 3,200 was 10:15, finishing ahead of Chanute’s Reno Lemon by 9.8 seconds. In the 1,600, he finished in 4:43.10. Travis Lutz of Ottawa was the winner in 4:35.

Brooks qualified for the 3,200 as a sophomore but missed out last season after finishing fifth in Regionals. He advances to State in the 1,600 for the first time.

Gracie Krokroskia will advance to State for Fort Scott’s girls as she finished second the 300-meter hurdles in 49.60. Aziza Patillo of Paola was the winner in 48 seconds flat.

Paxsten Eads finished third in the 3,200 meters in 12:10.70. Girard’s Callie Logue, three-time defending State champion in the event, won it in 11:07.70.

Fort Scott’s girls’ 4x800-meter relay team qualified after finishing fourth in 10:39.28 with Gabrielle Clements, Macayla McClure, Mallory Westhoff and Kelsey Carpenter. Girard’s team, which includes Logue, was the winner in 10:02.87.

The medalists in the individual events qualified in each for the first time. Westhoff, Carpenter and Krokroskia were a part of last year’s State-qualifying 4x800 as either a competitor or an alternate.

Of the other four boys’ medalists, Kyle Montojo and Connor Fess missed State berths by the slimmest of margins.

Montojo and Paola’s Evan Phillips each flew 19 feet, 6 3/4 inches in long jump, tying for fourth. The tie was broken by going back to each one’s second-best jump. Phillips’ was 19’ 6”. Montojo’s second-best jump of 19’ 4” was the only other one on which he was not called for a foul.

Connor Fess missed out on a berth in the 800 by 2/100ths of a second. He was fifth in 2:06.07 while Frontenac’s Jordan Ishimura was fourth in 2:06.05.

Fort Scott’s 4x100-meter relay team of John Montojo, Kyle Montojo, Jessie Lawrence and Korbyn Reyes finished sixth in 46 seconds flat. Morgan Stoughton was sixth in javelin with a throw of 132’ 10”.

For the girls, the other medalists were Carpenter, fifth in the 1,600 in 5:46.30, Abby Humble, fifth in discus at 99 feet even, and Gabriele Allen, fifth in javelin with a mark of 104’ 9”.

The State Track and Field Championships will be held at Wichita State University’s Cessna Stadium Friday and Saturday. Class 4A events on Friday begin at 2:10 p.m. Events in all classes on Saturday start at 7:45 a.m.

The time for each event featuring a Fort Scott (or Uniontown) athlete can be seen in the schedule at the bottom of this post.
