King, Fox gain experience at Wamego

WAMEGO — Fort Scott High School freshman Nick King finished tied for 28th in a field of 101 here Monday at the Class 4A State Golf Tournament .

King shot 45 on the front nine and 40 on the back to finish with a score of 85, 15 strokes over par.

Teammate Tanner Fox, a junior, placed 95th with his score of 57-54—111. This was also his first State appearance.

Defending individual champion Clete Carlson of Chanute finished ninth following a four-way playoff after finishing at 79. The Blue Comet junior shot 43 on the front nine and 36 on the back. Jonathan Loon of Wichita Trinity (41-38) won the playoff to finish sixth. Trinity’s Caden Vanlandingham (38-41) finished seventh and Wamego’s Cooper Spears (38-41) took eighth.

A three-way playoff at 75 was needed to crown a new State champion. Augusta senior Jake Becker (35-40) won the playoff with Larned senior Colton Massey (38-37) taking second and Rose Hill junior Payton Austin (38-37) finishing third.

Andover Central won its third State title on a tie-breaker over Trinity after both finished at 329. Central had the better fifth-golfer score. The Jaguars’ two previous state titles (2003, 2006) came when it was a Class 4A school. Host Wamego was third at 332while defending champion Hays finished fourth at 336. Chanute was fifth at 339.
