’Hound softball to Highland for first-round playoff

Lauren Scott bashed three home runs for Fort Scott Community College’s softball team as they swept the Haskell Indian Nations junior varsity in a make-up doubleheader at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex Monday by scores of 14-0 and 18-3.

Games scheduled for Wednesday at Cottey College were rained out, which brought a conclusion to the regular season for the Greyhounds (22-31).

Scott’s first home run came in the second inning of game one, a 2-run shot with nobody out. She was 2 for 3 with 4 runs batted in while both Aimee Wimp and Hayley Bledsoe were 2 for 3. Bledsoe drove in 4 runs.

Aubrey Smith (11-13) was the winning pitcher, holding Haskell to 3 hits and a walk while striking out 3.

Scott hit two homers in game two, bringing her season total to 14. She hit a 2-run shot with one out in the third and a 2-run homer with nobody out in the fourth. Bledsoe also hit a homer in the fourth, her’s coming with one on as well.

Bledsoe (7-7) allowed 2 walks and struck out 2 in 3 innings inside the circle while also going 2 for 3 with 2 RBI at the plate. Scott was 2 for 2 with 4 RBI. Kaylan Morgan drove in 3 runs.

Fort Scott now goes on the first round of the Region VI-Division II District D Tournament. The Greyhounds are seeded 12th and will begin a best-of-3 first-round series at third-seeded Highland (31-9) this afternoon. The first two games will be played as a doubleheader beginning at noon. The third game, if it’s needed, will be played at 1 p.m. Sunday. The winner of the series advances to double-elimination play at Topeka May 6-7.
