Saturday, November 12, 2016

Four members of Fort Scott Community College's volleyball team have received post-season honors from Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference coaches.

The Greyhounds finished the season with a 27-11 record after falling to No. 6-ranked Coffeyville in the Region VI District M championship match a week ago today. The Greyhounds finished tied for third place in KJCCC-Division II with Neosho County.

There are two post-season teams: KJCCC-Division II and Region VI-District M.

Sophomore setter Mickey Trimble and Coffeyville sophomore setter Carolina Machado were named Co-Most Valuable Players in the KJCCC. Daniela Santos, a freshman outside hitter for Coffeyville, was named Freshman of the Year. Red Ravens head coach Delice Downing was named the division's Coach of the Year for leading Coffeyville to the division title, district championship and into next weekend's NJCAA Division II National Tournament. Fort Scott is the team that gave the 37-1 Ravens their only loss of the season.

On the All-Conference squad, Trimble and sophomore right-side hitter Brette Moore received First-Team spots. Freshman outside hitter Megan Turner was voted to the Second Team. And freshman Katie Gorman, a Fort Scott High School graduate, was one of four liberos who were chosen for the Honorable Mention team.

In District M, Trimble and Moore were chosen for First Team spots and Turner and Gorman were chosen for Honorable Mention positions. District M consisted of the four schools that played in the post-season tournament -- Fort Scott, Coffeyville, Highland and Hesston -- plus Allen.

The qualifications for each Greyhound selected are as follows:

* Trimble led the nation in assists per set, with an average of 11.55. Coffeyville's Machado is second at 11.02 assists per set. No one else averages 11 per set, although there were a couple of players who averaged 10.9.

* Moore was second in the division in kills per set with an average of 3.72. Only Cowley outside hitter Olivia Powell, also a First-Team pick, averages more at 4.30 k/s. Moore's average put her at 11th in the nation. Powell is third in the nation.

* Turner finished sixth in the division in kills per set, 3.28.
