Fort Scott Community College's women are 4-0 for the first time since the 2007-08 season following a 59-56 victory over State Fair, Mo., at Arnold Arena Tuesday night.

The Greyhounds beat a Division I opponent for the second time this season, also having beaten Dodge City Friday at Johnson County (details page 5B). But while they beat the Conquistadors with some ease, they had to hold off a late rally to beat the Roadrunners (1-2).

Fort Scott survived a night on which it turned the ball over 30 times, resulting in 16 State Fair points. The Greyhounds' 44-29 dominance on the boards helped.

Fort Scott held a 5-0 lead early on before State Fair scored 10 of the next 12 to take its first lead.

Jordyn Danzer's 3-point play tied the score 10-10 with 3:47 to go in the quarter. But although Danzer and Rachel Newquist scored back-to-back baskets to make it 14-12 with a minute to go, State Fair took the lead back with a 3-pointer by Catie Kaifes and a layup from Grace Morrow with 13 seconds left. Carly Bohannon's stickback brought the 'Hounds within one at the buzzer.

Both teams scored just 6 points each in the second as they combined to go 3 of 22 from the field. Fort Scott made only one of its first seven shots, a jumper by Yazmin Batch to start the period. State Fair missed its first eight attempts before Aaliyah Cowan scored with 1:17 remaining to give the Roadrunners a 23-20 lead.

Lillie Holtgrave's free throws brought Fort Scott within one point at the half. Then Natalia Ready started the second half by taking steals in for consecutive baskets to give the Greyhounds a 26-23 lead.

State Fair scored the next four to take the lead again. But Fort Scott put in eight of the next 10 to go ahead 34-29 with 2:41 remaining in the third.

Danzer made two free throws for the Greyhounds with 2:13 left to extend the lead to 36-31. But Alexis Cowan and Ren'Cia Rolling scored for State Fair in the final 51 seconds to bring the Runners within a point.

Ready kicked off the fourth quarter back-to-back 3-pointers for the 'Hounds as the beginning of a 12-3 run that pushed the margin to 10 points with 6:07 to go.

State Fair scored 8 of the next 10, holding Fort Scott without a field goal for a bit less than three minutes as the Roadrunners got within 50-46 with 3:16 to go.

Newquist made a 3-pointer for Fort Scott with exactly three minutes to go. But Danae' Cole hit one in kind with 2:36 left for State Fair, cutting the deficit to 53-49.

Cole brought State Fair with 57-54 with 46 seconds left following a Greyhound turnover. After Batch made one of two free throws with 35 seconds left, Kendra Boone's stickback of a teammate's miss cut the lead to 58-56.

The Greyhounds turned the ball over again but Alexis Cowan missed a shot in the lane and Chasity Moore got the rebound for Fort Scott with one second remaining. She was fouled and made one of the two resulting free throws.

Danzer led Fort Scott with 16 points followed by Ready with 14. Kaifes led State Fair with 13 points with Alexis Cowan next with 12 and Cole following with 11.

Fort Scott shot 40 percent from the field, making 21 of 53 field-goal attempts. State Fair shot 35 percent on 19 of 55.

Moore led Fort Scott with 6 rebounds. Lillie Holtgrave handed out 3 assists.

Fort Scott plays in a classic at Kansas City Kansas this weekend. They will face the University of St. Mary junior varsity Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Penn Valley, Mo., Saturday at 2 p.m.
