ONLINE FIRST: Highland 20, Fort Scott 17

Sunday, October 30, 2016

Highland preserved a victory when sophomore defensive back Antonio Cole came up with his second interception of the game off a deflection with less than two minutes remaining and the Scotties were able to run out the clock to close out a 20-17 Jayhawk Conference win over Fort Scott Community College at Frary Field Saturday night.

Fort Scott (1-4 Jayhawk, 4-5 overall) got within one score with 7:47 to go when quarterback Nathan Rourke found Ke'Von Love on a third-and-17 pass from the Highland 33. That capped a drive that began at the Greyhounds' own 1-yard line after the defense held Scottie running back out of the end zone on four straight plays after he had gained a first-and-goal at the 1.

Rourke completed 26 of 48 passes for 276 yards. But Highland (3-3, 6-3) got both of its second-quarter touchdowns after getting possession deep in Greyhound territory to take a 20-7 lead into the locker room. After Cole's first interception, quarterback Khalil Render found Demarre Kitt from 14 yards out. Then after blocking a punt, Highland took over at the Fort Scott 18 and scored two plays later on an 8-yard run by Terry.

Fort Scott closed to within 20-10 on a 33-yard field goal by Brody Southwell in the third.

The Greyhounds will play their final home game of the season next Saturday against Hutchinson.

More details from this game will be published in Wednesday's print edition.
