Eagles win TRL pre-season tourney

PLEASANTON -- Uniontown's volleyball team went 6-0 here Saturday in winning the Three Rivers League Pre-Season Volleyball Tournament.

The Eagles were 5-0 in their pool, which had one more team in it than the other pool as the TRL is now an 11-team league with the addition of Yates Center.

"Certainly, a good day of volleyball for us," Uniontown head coach Jackie Hall said. "We really needed to play someone other than ourselves. I am so proud of the team. They played well throughout the tournament. We do still have areas to improve on, but for our first outing, I was extremely pleased with our performance."

In their first match, Uniontown beat Oswego in three sets, 25-19, 21-25, 25-22. Keely Goodridge had 9 kills and served 3 aces for the Eagles. Holly Shinn also had 9 kills. Kate Coll handed out 12 assists and Jimme Keller dished 11. Haley O'Neal was credited with 7 solo blocks.

The Eagles swept their remaining matches, beginning with a 25-14, 25-16 win over Chetopa. Goodridge served 5 aces, Keller handed out 5 assists and Danielle Nading recorded 2 blocks.

Next, Uniontown swep Altoona-Midway, 25-5, 25-4, with Goodridge serving 9 aces, Shinn collecting 9 kills and Coll handing out 9 assists.

Then the Eagles swept Crest, 25-16, 25-21. Shinn had 11 kills and Coll delivered 10 assists.

Uniontown closed out pool play with a 25-13, 25-15 sweep of St. Paul. Shinn finished with 11 more kills and Coll recorded 7 assists.

Oswego finished second in the pool with a 4-1 record and faced Jayhawk-Linn for third place after the Jayhawks came out of a 3-way tie for second in the other pool with Pleasanton and Marmaton Valley at 2-2. Oswego swept the match, 25-13, 25-13.

The Eagles faced Northeast for the championship. The Vikings were 4-0 in the opposite pool with a 3-set win over Jayhawk-Linn and sweeps of Pleasanton, Marmaton Valley and Yates Center.

Uniontown won the final, 25-19, 25-13. Holly Shinn had 6 kills and served 4 aces. Goodridge also had 6 kills while Nading was credited with 5 solo blocks and Keller handed out 10 assists.

The Eagles will be in Girard today for a non-league triangular that also includes Erie. Play begins at 5 p.m. This will also be the season opener for Uniontown's junior varsity team.
