Uniontown council members learn about washed out culvert

Uniontown council members discussed a washed out culvert and a financial audit during their monthly council meeting held Tuesday night.

Superintendent Bobby Rich showed the council a picture of the riprap between the railroad culvert and Union Street culvert. The picture showed a small amount of concrete that was added to the east side of the riprap is all that's holding it in place.

Since a section to the south of the concrete has been washed out, Rich said a backhoe is needed to retrieve the rock from the south side of the Union Street culvert and move it back to the washed out area.

An approval was given by the council for Rich and Dave Wehry to attend the KMU Gas Boot Camp, July 27-29 at McPherson. The cost of the boot camp is $125 per person not including lodging and mileage.

The boot camp will re-qualify Rich in several tasks, and will qualify Wehry in those tasks also. Rich said qualifying Wehry was important so he will be able to work on the gas system in Rich's absence.

City Clerk Sally Johnson reported the financial audit, scheduled for June 28-29, had to be rescheduled by the auditor. Johnson said they are looking at July 19-20 or July 27-28.

City Treasurer Charlene Bolinger said she would like to wait until budget is done in August. Johnson said she will contact the auditor to reschedule for August.

Johnson also asked the council if the city was going to provide the port-a-potty's for the July Fourth celebration again this year. The council approved the rental of one handicap and one regular port-a-potty.

The council also approved a request by Johnson to purchase the newest desktop version of Quickbooks from Sam's Club for a one-time cost, because the old version is no longer supported and cannot be updated.

Mayor Larry Jurgensen opened a discussion on a proposal received from SEKAN Asphalt Services, Inc. to mill and repave the intersections of Washington and Fifth streets and Sherman and Fifth streets, and to pave the parking area for the fire station storm shelter location.

Jurgensen said another proposal has been requested from Rickey's Asphalt and Sealcoat for the same areas, but they were not going to be able to view the proposed areas until the next morning. Jurgensen said he would also like to get a proposal for concreting those areas.

In other business, a local inspector for the Storm Shelter Special Round CDBG grant has suggested moving the shelter location to the west. This move was requested due to an incline in the sidewalk.

The council made the decision to leave the shelter flush with the east side of the fire station, in hopes of being able to purchase another shelter in the future.

After a request from Johnson, the council adopted the Civil Rights/Fair Housing Policy, since it is required by CDBG for the shelter project.
