Fort Scott City Commissioners approve street program

provements is set after Fort Scott City Commissioners approved the 2016 street program Tuesday night.

Chad Brown, streets and traffic supervisor for the city, told commissioners the proposed improvements in the 2016 annual program include 11 total projects; five road projects and six off-street parking projects. Brown said the road projects will involve a "complete overhaul."

Brown said concrete will be used for the parking areas as "concrete is cheaper than asphalt and lasts longer."

Asphalt will be used for streets.

Road projects in the program, as well as their costs and amount of materials needed for improvements, are Ninth Street between Main Street and National Avenue (271 tons, $16,531), 10th Street between Main Street and National Avenue (391 tons, $23,851), and 11th Street between Main Street and National Avenue (291 tons, $17,751.)

Brown said asphalt will be replaced on Ninth Street while 10th and 11th streets, which are currently brick, will be replaced with new asphalt.

There is also a plan to re-asphalt Judson Street between First and Second streets (393 tons, at a cost of $23,973), and redo the intersection at Eighth and Wilson streets (70 yards at a cost of $6,930).

Off-street parking areas in the program are the south side of Wall Street by Wall and Judson streets (60 yards, $5,940), the south side of Oak Street by Oak and Judson streets (42 yards, $4,158), the north side of Second Street near National Avenue and Main Street (30 yards, $2,970,), the south side of Second Street near National and Main (39 yards, $3,861), the north side of Third Street near National and Main (68 yards, $6,732) and the south side of Third Street near National and Main (68 yards, $6,732.)

Total cost for the 2016 program is $130,429. Cost of materials is $37,323 for 377 yards of concrete at $99 per yard, $82,106 for 1,346 tons of asphalt at $61 per ton, and $11,000 for miscellaneous oil and patch work. Brown said he has about $150,000 to work with each year in the budget for streets.
