Tigers salvage split with Girard

Saturday, April 2, 2016

Emily Hale became just the second Fort Scott High School player to hit a home run over the fence at Don Hewett Field Thursday night, belting a solo shot over the 14-feet tall fence in right field during the Tigers' 8-3 victory in the second game of a non-league doubleheader versus Girard. The visiting Trojans won the opener, 13-8.

Hale joins Kyenne Wade as the only two Tigers to launch one out of Don Hewett. Wade, now a freshman at Avila University in Kansas City, Mo., did so as a junior in 2014 versus Baxter Springs.

Several other Tigers have hit balls out of the park in road games, where the fences are usually shorter.

Hale's homer made it 8-1 at the time. It was the second of her two hits in the game. Taylor Krokroskia also had 2 hits and drove in 2 runs. Bailie Brown went 3 for 4.

The Tigers (3-1) led 6-1 after 2 innings.

Lane Bohlken allowed 2 earned runs on 8 hits and a walk while striking out 3.

Girard scored in every inning of the opener but the sixth. The Trojans were up 11-4 after 4 1/2 innings. The Tigers scored 4 in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap to 3 runs.

Skyelar Brown, Katie Gorman, Abby Denton and Karlee Stanley each had 2 hits for the Tigers. Fort Scott had 12 base hits but all of them were singles.

The Tigers will play in Louisburg Tuesday night in another non-league doubleheader. Play begins at 4:30 p.m.
