'Hound softball settles for split
Fort Scott Community College softball managed only a split with the visiting Oklahoma Wesleyan junior varsity at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex Thursday, winning game one 6-4 but dropping the nightcap 11-8.
The Greyhounds (9-10) got their first 3 runs of the opener in the bottom of the first inning. OWU scored once in the top of the inning but Alex Perez led off the bottom half with a single to right and scored on a one-out Kristen Tyler triple. Taylor Brecheisen followed that with her fourth home run of the season.
Fort Scott got another run in the bottom of the second. Cheyenne Brewer led off with a single then scored on Tyler's 2-out double to left to make it 4-1.
OWU scored twice in the top of the third. Cheyenne Pierce scored in the bottom of the inning on a one-out error. Kylie Wilson, pinch running in the bottom of the fifth after a one-out K.C. Beardsley single, stole second, moved to third on an error and scored on a ground out.
OWU scored once in the top of the seventh with nobody out. But pitcher Aubrey Smith (5-4) got three straight fly-ball outs to end the game. She pitched all 7 innings, allowing one earned run on 10 hits. She did not walk anyone and struck out 10.
Beardsley was 3 for 3 at the plate while Tyler went 2 for 4.
While scoring was more frequent in game two, 5 errors while allowing 13 hits did not do the Greyhounds any favors. Only 4 of the 11 runs Fort Scott pitchers allowed were earned.
Fort Scott had 9 hits, 2 each by Brecheisen, Brewer and Allison Davis. Brewer and Davis each drove in 2 runs.
The Greyhounds will be home again Saturday for their Breast Cancer Awareness games. The doubleheader versus the Haskell Indian National University junior varsity begins at 1 p.m. at the BRW.
