LCDR Richard I. Comstock, Ret.

LCDR Richard I. Comstock, Ret., 83, of Pittsburg, passed away at 3:35 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016, at the Guest Home Estates in Fort Scott, Kan.

He was born April 13, 1932, at Fort Scott, Kan., the son of H. I. and Helen (Gauggel) Comstock.

Mr. Comstock served in the United States Navy for 20 years, and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal, The National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

On June 6, 1955, he was united in marriage to Joan S. Comstock in Annapolis, Md. She preceded him in death in 1999.

On June 5, 2001, he was united in marriage to Norma L. DeRidder in Pittsburg, Kan. She survives of the home.

Mr. Comstock was an engineer for the United States Navy, Arinc and Wyle Labs.

Membership was held in the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Scott, Kan. He also was a Scout Master, Cub Master and was a Troop Committee Chairman for the Baltimore Area Council BSA. He was a co-founder of the Crabtown Model Railroad.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Stewart (Debbie) Comstock of Annapolis, Md., and David Comstock of New York City, N.Y., Amy Comstock of New York City, N.Y., Scott (Charlotte) Russell of Pittsburg, Kan., Randy (Lisa) Russell of Pittsburg, Kan., Diana (Steve) Mitchell of Fort Scott, Kan., Judith Russell of Weir, Kan., and Lori (Steve) Gardner of Pittsburg, Kan., one brother-in-law, Nelson Kasten of Cape Girardeau, Mo., grandchildren; Clara Comstock and James Comstock, Destiny (Joe) Foulk, Stephen (Jordan) Mitchell, Autumn (Kevin) Durossette, Zachary Mitchell (Morgan Brown), Denver Mitchell (Kaylee Binford), Hayden Gardner, Addison Gardner, Jessica (Nick) Nicholson, Randi Urban, Maranda Russell, Scott Russell, Sydney Russell and 2/C MIDN Charles J. Russell USN, and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his first wife, he is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Alice Kasten.

A memorial service for Mr. Comstock is set for 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Scott with Rev. Dr. Jared Witt conducting the service. Private family burial will take place at a later date. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 10 a.m., at the church. The family suggests memorials to the Fort Scott Mercy Hospice and/or First Presbyterian Church in Fort Scott.
