Independence sweeps Greyhounds

INDEPENDENCE -- Fort Scott Community College's basketball teams were swept by Independence here Wednesday night in non-conference games between the former Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division rivals.

Independence's women took a 68-51 victory over the Greyhounds, building a 24-11 lead after one quarter and making it hold up.

Yes, quarter. The women's game has changed from two 20-minute halves to four 10-minute quarters this season. The men's game, however, remains the same in structure as it has been.

Independence's men led 34-23 at halftime in a game the Pirates went on to win, 76-61 over the 'Hounds.

This was the season opener for both Independence teams. These were not division games as the Jayhawk Conference is now aligned to reflect how the schools have elected to compete at the national level. The 14 NJCAA Division I schools, including Independence and other former East rivals Cowley, Coffeyville, Allen and Neosho County, now play in the same division as the former Western Division schools. The Division II schools, including Fort Scott, Labette, Johnson County, Highland and Kansas City, play in their own division.

Kamiron Luptak led Fort Scott's women (1-2) with 14 points followed by Kayleigh Haggard with 12. Haggard, who made 5 of 8 shots from the field, was the best shooter on the night for a Greyhound team that finished 18 of 64 from the field for just 28 percent. The 'Hounds were also 8 of 36 from the 3-point line and 7 of 15 at the charity stripe.

Brianna Jackson-Brewer led Independence with 12 points. The Pirates shot 36 percent on 27 of 76. Indy was also credited with 65 rbounds, 10 by Ciera Palmer. Fort Scott's team totals were not reported.

Fort Scott's men (0-3) shot 49 percent from the field in their loss. Kendall Oilver scored 16 points off the bench while Anthony Cerda added 12 and Jeremiah Fleming 10.
