WICHITA -- It was a lot chillier than expected here Saturday when the Kansas State Track and Field Championships resumed for its second day of action. Temperatures in the mid-50s greeted athletes and spectators alike.

Fort Scott junior Cassidy Westhoff's rivalry with Girard's Callie Logue continued in the Class 4A 1,600-meter finals with the Trojan sophomore once again winning, this time in 5:06.38. Westhoff finished in 5:08.27. The pair finished in the same order in Friday's 3,200-meter final. Third place Saturday went to Atchison junior Sarah Jalmoa, well behind Westhoff in 5:19.85.

Junior Nick Woods improved last year's State finish in discus by two spots as he finished fifth with a best effort of 150 feet, 10 inches on his final throw. That pushed him past junior Michael Zabel of St. George-Rock Creek, who finished at 150' 7". Connor McMullen of Louisburg took the championship with a mark of 173' 1" on his final throw after he had fouled on five of his previous six attempts.

Fort Scott girls' 4x800-meter relay team of junior Grace Willis, sophomore Kelsey Carpenter, and freshmen Asia Farrington and Kristal Castillo finished 15th with a time of 10:59.79. Baldwin was the winner, successfully defending its title in 10:03.03.

Baldwin's girls were the team champion for the third consecutive season and the fifth time in the last six seasons. The Bulldogs scored 85 points while Southeast Kansas League school Independence finished as the runner-up with 67 points. As Fort Scott's only female scorer, Westhoff's 16 points she scored by herself tied the Tigers for 16th place with SEK rival Coffeyville.

Andale won the boys' team championship for the third consecutive season and the fifth time since 2007 with 68.5 points. Bishop Miege was a distant second with 47. Fort Scott tied for 27th place with Rose Hill, each team scoring 9 points.

NOTES -- Northeast-Arma senior Kaylee Bogina, daughter of Fort Scott head girls' track coach Tracey Bogina, finished second in the Class 3A 1,600 meters on Saturday, turning in a time of 5:09.68. She led the first three laps before she was passed on the final lap by Anne-Sophie Dalmasso, a senior from St. Marys, who clocked in at 5:06.25. She ran the final lap in 1:12.63 compared to Bogina's 1:16.24.

Bogina was still nearly eight seconds faster than the third-place finisher, Osage City senior Aundrea Koger.

Bogina won the Class 3A 3,200 meter championship Friday morning, turning in a time of 10:58.40 to finish ahead of Dalmasso, who finished in 10:59.06. They were about 30 seconds faster than the third-place finisher....

The Southeast Kansas League had seven State champions in Class 4A, six of which were Independence girls' entrants. Senior Kalei Matthews won both the 100 meters and 200 meters. In the first event, she finished in 12.20 seconds beating rival Andre'a Newton of Coffeyville. In the 200, she turned in a time of 25.40. Matthews' twin sister, Shalei, won triple jump with an effort of 37' 4".

Senior Shania Vannoster claimed high jump after a 3-way tie-breaker at 5' 4". Morgan Walther of Andale was placed third because she needed one more attempt to clear that height than Vannoster and Chanute's Madi Rollins.

Vannoster and Rollins cleared 5' 4" in the same number of tries, so the tie-breaker went back to 5' 2", which Rollins needed more attempts to clear.

The other pair of Indy golds were in relays. The Matthews sisters and Vannoster were members of both teams. They were joined by Nichole Moses in winning the 4x100 in 49.38. Avery Risner helped the Bulldogs win the 4x400 in 4:02.70.

Parsons senior Isiah Taylor won the SEK's lone 4A title, clearing 6' 10" in high jump....

Pittsburg freshman McKenzie Willis won the Class 5A championship in the girls' 800 meters. She finished in a time of 2:19.03 to beat out Salina South senior Emilee Holloway by about a second and a half.
