Four firsts for Fort Scott at opening meet

ALTAMONT --Track and field season opened here Thursday for both varsity and junior varsity teams at Fort Scott High School at the Labette County Invitational.

Four varsity athletes won events. Cassidy Westhoff won the girls' 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:33 and also placed second in the 3,200. Tiger girls won only two other medals -- third-place in the 800 by Grace Willis and a fifth in the 100 by Keaira Meadows.

Josh Hudiburg won boys' javelin with an effort of 167 feet, 7 inches. Nick Woods took discus at 149 feet even. Issac Thurston rounds out the list of event winners, taking the 900 in 2:11.

The were four event winners in girls' JV competition. The 4x800-meter relay team turned in a time of 12:28. Kelsey Carpenter won the 300-meter hurdles in 55.06 and pole vault at 6' 6". And Paxsten Eads took the 3,200 in 14:21.

There were no event winners in JV boys' competition.
