Uniontown sweeps high-scoring twinbill

YATES CENTER -- Uniontown baseball picked up a pair of victories, sweeping Yates Center Tuesday. The sweep pulled the Eagles even for the season at 2-2.

The Eagles had to rally to win a 19-18 squeaker in the opener but the second game was much different, with Uniontown prevailing 20-6.

"I thought our kids played well," UHS Coach Jeff Reed said. "We were down 13 to 1 at one point and come back to win the (first) game. It wasn't a pretty game but for a young team to get a win, it's always a good thing."

Yates Center held a 13-1 lead after three innings. But an 11-run fourth gave the Eagles a lead they would never relinquish. Uniontown added 5 more in the fifth while the Wildcats got one in the bottom half of the inning. In the seventh, Uniontown added 2 more runs to make it 19-14 before holding off a Yates Center rally in the bottom of the fourth.

John Kuns started on the mound for the Eagles in the first game.

"He didn't have his stuff tonight but we brought Cale Coyan in and he pitched really well," Reed said. "Broderick Glessner ended the game on the hill."

Kuns pitched two innings, allowing 8 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks while 3 striking out 3 before giving way to Coyan (1-0), who pitched 4 innings allowing 8 runs -- 2 earned -- on 3 hits and 7 walks. He also struck out 7. Glessner pitched the final inning, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk with one K to get a save.

J.P. Pearson led the offense with 4 hits and 5 runs batted in. Kuns added 3 hits and 3 RBI, with Colby Seested adding 2 runs batted in.

Glessner came right back out on the mound to start the second game and "pitched well," Reed said. "Seested then took over pitched the final two innings. For a freshman who has not pitched in several years and then to pitch in a varsity game, he did exceptionally well."

Yates Center took the early lead with a two-run first before Uniontown put together a 3-run second. The Wildcats drove in 2 more in the third to retake the lead, 4-3. The hosts added a run in the fourth but the Eagles had pushed 4 across in the top half to regain the lead for good at 7-5.

The visitors then ran off 7 runs in the fifth and 6 more in the sixth, while Yates managed just one run in the final frame. The 10-run rule brought an early end to the game.

Leading the 16-hit attack for Uniontown were Glessner and Coyan with 3 safeties and Kuns contributing 2. Tanner Stewart helped the cause by drawing 3 walks. Kuns, Coyan and Jacob Wiggans each had 3 RBI.

Glessner (1-1) finished with 7 strikeouts in 4 innings. He allowed 3 earned runs on 5 hits and 5 walks. Seested allowed a run on 3 hits and struck out 3 over the final 2 innings.

"In both games, we tried to do too much at the plate early in the games but after we got relaxed, it came together," Reed said.

"To see a group of kids come out and see adversity in its face, overcome it and come out with two victories, that excites me."

Uniontown was due to host St. Paul Thursday in a Three-Rivers League doubleheader. The Eagles will also play a league twinbill Tuesday at Northeast.
