COFFEYVILLE -- Fort Scott High School's wrestling team finished in third place in the Southeast Kansas League Dual Wrestling Tournament here Thursday, beating Independence in the third-place match.

The dual tournament took the place of the season-long round-robin schedule beginning last season. Chanute won this tournament for the second consecutive year, beating Pittsburg in the final, 40-32, despite the fact that the Purple Dragons won the last two matches of the dual. The Blue Comets, coached by FSHS graduate Andy Albright, win their third consecutive league title and seventh in the past nine seasons. It's the 14th title for Chanute, second to former league member Columbus, which won 19 championships.

Fort Scott won its first dual over Labette County, 59-18, one in which 11 of the bouts were forfeited. The Tigers received nine of those walkovers and Labette County one. The other was a double forfeit as neither team had a 195-pound wrestler.

Of the three matches held, Tiger wrestlers won only one. Zarek Fewell defeated Rogan Bruce by technical fall, outscoring him 16-1 at 138 pounds.

Teacher met student in the semifinals as Albright's Comets, the top-ranked team in Class 4A in this week's Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association poll, defeated David Brown's Tigers, 70-6. Fort Scott's points came on a Derek Bollinger pin of Matt Devoe at 132 pounds. There were a pair of one-point losses for the Tigers. Alex Gorman lost 10-9 to Sam Wehlage at 120 pounds and Charles Pytlowany was nipped, 1-0, by Gage Clark at 220.

The Tigers then went into the consolation bracket, where they face Parsons and won 48-27. Fort Scott had a lead of 36-0 before the first match was held due to forfeits. Then at 152 pounds, Chris Stell pinned Tyler Metcalf of Parsons. Hector Torres pinned Parsons' Josh O'Hara at 182 pounds. Parsons won the other five matches that were held.

That win put the Tigers into the third-place match with Independence, which lost to Pittsburg in the first round then beat Labette County to get to this match. Fort Scott won that match 46-29 after the Bulldogs held a 17-3 lead after four weight classes.

Gorman took a 7-6 decision from Jeremiah Lawrie at 120 to give the Tigers their first points. Bollinger claimed a major decision over Kyler Sanders at 132. Then Fewell won a 7-2 verdict over Jackson Stafford.

The Tigers took the lead in the dual, 22-17, when Stell accepted a forfeit at 152. Trevor Hazlip pinned Robert Skaggs at 160 and Ben Daniels stuck Cal Bloomfield to put 12 more points on the board for Fort Scott. The Tigers' remaining wins, at 185 and 220, were awarded by forfeit.

Bollinger went 4-0 on the day and saw his varsity record, forfeits included, improve to 35-11 with 14 pins. Fewell, Gorman, Stell and Torres were all winners of three out of four matches. Fewell moved to 28-14, Gorman stands at 17-10, Stell is now 21-19 and Torres is 10-15.

The next outing for the Tigers is the Louisburg Class 4A Regional Tournament next weekend, February 20 and 21.
