James Eugene Evans

James Eugene Evans, age 82, resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, at Guest Home Estates. He was born July 29, 1932, in Fort Scott, the son of Samuel and Mable Brown Evans. He married Darlene Clark in 1955. She preceded him in death. He served his country as a gunner's mate second class in the U.S. Navy. He was injured when his gun fell on him. While in traction in the Philippines, he contracted malaria. By the grace of God and his strong will, he pulled through. He worked as a pipe fitter for General Motors for over 23 years, retiring from the Fairfax plant in Kanas City. He married Lylise Hare on Aug. 3, 1996, in Tulsa, Okla. James always enjoyed a good prank or joke. He loved dogs and considered anything a child did was "cute." He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union Local 31. He attended Christian Gospel Chapel in Fort Scott.

Survivors include his wife Lylise of the home; a step-son, Jeremy Woods, Owasso, Okla.; a sister, Betty Simpson, Fort Scott; several nieces and nephews; and the family dog, Nippy. Besides his first wife, Darlene, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Norman, Samuel, and Danny Evans; a sister, Mary Simmons; a niece, Linda Lee Clark, and his parents.

Pastor Danny Brown will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the U.S. National Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post No. 1165 V.F.W.
