E. Maxine Hinton, age 85, a former resident of Fort Scott and more recently of Manhattan, Kan., died Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014 at The Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kan. Maxine was born April 28, 1929, in Clinton, Henry County, Mo., the daughter of William John Tubbesing and Florence Cornelius Holt. She graduated from Southeast High School in Kansas City, Mo., in 1945. Maxine was united in marriage to Richard Irving Phillips on May 14, 1949. Richard passed Jan. 11, 1978. Maxine later married Eldon Lawrence Hinton March 11, 1985. He passed March 4, 2005.

Maxine was employed at Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott for over 15 years as the human resources director. Maxine was a member of the Fort Scott United Methodist Church, Kiwanis Pioneer Club, CASA volunteer, and Beta Sigma Pi.

She moved to Manhattan, Kan., in 2009 to be closer to family. She attended the College Avenue United Methodist Church, enjoyed playing bridge at the Senior Citizen Senior, and spending time with family and her beloved cat Sasha and supporting the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs.

She was survived by her son State Representative Tom Phillips and wife Dr. Debra Doubek, Manhattan, Kan.; her daughter Carol Hart and husband Col. William L. Hart (USA, Ret.) of Spring, Texas; four grandchildren: Kristen Elley and her husband Chad, Erica Breese and her husband Matt, Nathan Phillips, and Neil Phillips; four great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn and Easton Elley, Brooklyn and Caroline Breese. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her brother, Irvin Richard Tubbesing on March 7, 2008.

Rev. Steven Cole will conduct graveside services at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10 at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Scott, Kan. The family will receive friends at the Cheney Witt Chapel on Monday beginning at 12:30 p.m. prior to leaving for the cemetery.
