No. 1 Miege sweeps; Blue Comets take SEK title

Saturday, October 18, 2014

cott High's volleyball team suffered a sweep here Thursday night at the hands of defending Class 4A State champ Bishop Miege in a non-league match and Chanute in a match that determined the SEK champion.

Miege (26-7), State champion in either 4A or 5A five of the last six years, is ranked No. 1 by the Kansas Volleyball Association in Class 4A-Division I. Six of their seven losses are to ranked teams. The Stags are 14-6 against teams ranked in either Kansas or Missouri. Among Miege's wins is a sweep of Class 5A No. 1 Lenexa St. James.

So it's not surprising that Miege made short work of both teams, beating Chanute 25-10, 25-6, and Fort Scott, 25-12, 25-14. In the Tigers' match with the Stags, Abi Keating led with 3 kills and handed out 4 assists. Ashley Cook also had 4 assists and picked up 6 digs. Abby Denton led in digs with 7.

The final match of the night was for the SEK title with both teams undefeated to this point in league play. The host Blue Comets swept the Tigers, 25-18, 25-19, to finish 6-0 (34-3 overall) and win their third straight championship. Fort Scott finished in second place at 5-1 and is 18-13 overall going into Saturday's regular-season ending tournament at Anderson County.

Against Chanute, Elisha Hasenplaugh had 8 kills. Keating handed out 13 assists while Cook dealt 7. Gorman came up with 18 digs and Denton had 7.

Saturday's tournament at Garnett begins at 9 a.m. Next weekend, the Tigers will head into Class 4A-Division I Sub-State play at Paola. The other schools rounding out the four-team field are third-ranked Louisburg and Spring Hill.

NOTES -- The Blue Comets have won 22 consecutive league matches with their last SEK loss coming against Pittsburg in 2011....

A "three-peat" has been accomplished only two other times since volleyball became a league sport in 1981. This current Blue Comet team is the first to win all three during its run outright....
