Dr. Charles E Jones

Dr. Charles E Jones passed away on Sept. 6, 2014 at home on Pine Island, Fla. He was born in Cany, Kan., (in Montgomery County) on Dec. 4 1931, to Verle Floyd and Hazel Wilma Jones. He attended Fort Scott High School, then continued his education at the University of Kansas.

His medical studies, also at KU, were interrupted by his military service in the U.S. Air Force, where he was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska.

He married Myrle Welch in 1953.

Upon earning his medical degree, he established his private practice in Overland Park. In 1972 he accepted the position of director of the emergency room facility at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, where he worked until his retirement in 1996. While there he not only supervised similar emergency room units in Olathe and in Gardner, he was responsible, under the auspices of SMMC, for the staffing of satellite emergency care units at Ward Parkway, Oak Park, and Metcalf South shopping centers.

He played a crucial role in the founding of MED-ACT (Johnson County Medical Action) in Johnson County. Appointed to a blue ribbon committee in 1973, he played an instrumental role, upon successful election of the creation of an emergency paramedic entity in 1974, in the advising and overseeing of what is now MED-ACT, acting as it's medical director from 1976-1990.

He was also the deputy coroner for Johnson County

In the mid 1990s he retired and relocated to Florida. Once there he was involved in many humanitarian projects and trips overseas. He volunteered to travel to the gulf coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, working under the auspices of FEMA, one of seven tours he did with that organization. He traveled overseas with FL-2 DMAT (Florida two Disaster Medical Assistance Team) and with various religious organizations, including trips to Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

In 2013 he married Annie Jones, his companion of several years.

He is preceded in death by his son, Richie Scott (d. 1973), and his brother Gene of Bernice, Oklahoma; he is survived by his three children Charles M., Doug B. and Sandra D., the mother of this three children, his second wife, and two grandchildren.
