Lavon Maxine Embry

Lavon Maxine Embry, age 91, formerly of Fort Scott, more recently of Spring Hill, Kan., died Saturday, June 21, 2014, at the Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Mo. She was born Jan. 27, 1923, in Erie, Kan., the daughter of Ollie and Lettie Knott Fowler. She graduated from Fort Scott High School. She married Virgil Eugene Embry on July 5, 1941, at Girard, Kan. He preceded her in death on Feb. 15, 2002. The couple lived in Kansas City until Virgil's retirement. They then moved to Grove, Okla., and later returned to Fort Scott in the early 1990s. In her earlier years, she enjoyed bowling and camping. She loved to square dance and was a former member of the Iza Stompers. Traveling was a passion that took the couple to every state except for Hawaii and Alaska. She was also fond of baking, especially cookies.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon House and husband Bill, Wellsville, Kan., and Karen Higginbotham and husband Denny, Bucyrus, Kan.; four grandchildren, Richard Young and wife Tammi, Brian Young, Greg Higginbotham and wife Michele, and Scott Higginbotham and wife Lora; six great grandchildren, Shane Young, Taylor Young, Brody Young, Kelsey Higginbotham, Austin Higginbotham, and Blake Higginbotham; four nieces, Bobbie Roberts, Carol Fulton, Judy Welch, and Janice Hardin; and one nephew, Jerry Embry. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Glendel and Robert Fowler.

Rev. Chuck Russell will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. Memorials are suggested to either Crossroads Hospice, Overland Park or Kansas City Hospice House, and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, PO Box 347, 201 S.
