Rain shortens TRL tourney to 9 holes

OSWEGO -- The Three Rivers League Golf Tournament was shortened by rain here Monday and that may have robbed Uniontown's golfers of a chance to earn some medals.

"We didn't have the front nine scores we were hoping for and, unfortunately, started playing better on the back nine only to be rained out and have to settle for our front 9 totals as our scores," Uniontown head coach Jason Tourtillott said. "The heavy rain moved in when the kids were on the 12th hole and forced us off the course."

With the tournament shortened to nine holes, two Uniontown golfers just missed medaling. Jonathon Wheeler shot 47 and Nick Reynolds finished at 48. However, the lowest score to medal was a 46, which was the total for four players. Cole Rockhold finished with a 61 for the Eagles, who had only three golfers and so could not compete for the team title.

Oswego won the team championship with a four-man score of 178, two strokes ahead of Jayhawk-Linn. Marmaton Valley was third with a 194, Chetopa fifth at 196 and Pleasanton the last eligible team with a 200.

Wes Leach of Jayhawk-Linn won the individual crown with a 40. Teammate Reece Dawson, Chetopa's Breylan Berrios and Pleasanton's Matt Bauer all shot 41. Tie-breaker information was not included in the results.

Travis Schenker of Oswego finished fifth with a 42. Blake Clayborn of Chetopa was sixth with a 43. Shawn Riley of Oswego came in seventh at 44 and Mitch Covey of Jayhawk-Linn was eighth with a 45. Oswego's Weston Eckerman and Ben Dickerson, Jayhawk's Freddie Barnes, and Pleasanton's Brenton Laver all shot 46.

The Eagles will play at Linn Valley Thursday in Pleasanton's regular-season tournament. They will return here Monday as the Blu-Jays also host the Class 2A Regional Tournament.
