Numbers shy but Hall optimistic

Lack of athletes out for track this spring at Uniontown High School will pose some logistical problems. But while the numbers may be small, the team does return a blend of experience with a contingent of newcomers.

With 14 athletes out for the 2014 season, the girls' squad is made up of two girls -- senior Emily Shinn and freshman Shalina Harper.

"We're a combination of returning track athletes, and those out for their first time," head coach Jackie Hall noted.

Shinn, who played softball last season, will be competing in both hurdle events, high jump and long jump.

Harper "had a solid season in junior high, competing in the mid and distance races, 800 and 1600," Hall said. "She will also possibly throw javelin and discus."

On the boys' side, returning seniors Montana Beerbower (1,600 and 3,200 meters) and David Brown (shot put, discus and javelin) are joined by Jary Harp, who will compete in the middle and distance races and high jump.

Returning junior Cole Schafer will compete in sprints, long jump and the 4x100 relay, while newcomer Lane Sutterby will be competing in the shot, discus and javelin.

Returning sophomores are Josh Wisely, who will compete in the sprints and 4x100 relay; Gavin Miller, 300 intermediate hurdles, javelin, and 4x100 relay; Zach Davis, 300 intermediate hurdles, triple jump; John Reed, sprints, long jump, high jump and 4x100 relay; Austin Ehrman, mid and distance races and triple jump; and Tommy Joles, sprints.

Both Davis and Joles will be working with the 4x100 relay also, noted Hall. Jonathan Harp, a freshman, will be competing in both distance races.

The Eagles traveled to Oswego Tuesday, April 8 for their first meet. Results will be published when they become available.

"All of them have been working hard and are excited to begin the season," Hall said. "The Oswego meet is a great one for us to start with, as we will be competing against schools that are close to our same size.

"This gives us the opportunity to see some competition that we will not see throughout the season."
