Waneta Madeline Beerbower, age 82, resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at her home. She was born June 28, 1931, in Bourbon County, Kan., the daughter of Jud and Mollie Mabery Johnson. She graduated from Fort Scott High School with the class of 1954. She married Carl Beerbower on June 14, 1956, at the Cherry Grove Baptist Church in Fort Scott. He preceded her in death on Dec. 23, 2010. Waneta worked for Western Insurance as a typist/receptionist for over 25 years, retiring in 1987. She was past president and treasurer for the V.F.W. Auxiliary, as well as a member of Hiattville O.E.S., Daughters of the Nile, Eastern Star, and Azrim Temple No. 81 Pittsburg, Kansas.

Survivors include her daughter Marilyn Carleen Beerbower of the home; special friends and caregivers Cody Mitchell and Ellen Chaplin; a sister, Wilma Hunsacker, Salinas, Calif.; two nieces Terry Gauge and Judy Lamb; a nephew, Mike Hunsacker; and a great nephew, Chris Hunsacker. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Johnson; a niece, Janet West; and her parents.

There was cremation. William James Schafer will conduct memorial services at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 20, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the U.S. National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to either the Shrine Transportation Fund or Mercy Hospice and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, P.O. Box 347, 201 S. Main, Fort Scott, Kansas 66701.
