Middle schoolers sweep Jayhawk

Fort Scott Middle School's boys basketball "A" teams got their first wins of the season in a sweep of Jayhawk Junior High at the FSMS gymnasium Monday night.
The seventh-grade "A" team shut out the Jayhawks in the first quarter and allowed only one point in the fourth of a 41-12 victory. The eighth-grade "A" team held off a Jayhawk rally to prevail, 34-33. Both teams evened their records at 1-1.
There were no "B" team games due to the small rosters of Jayhawk Junior High.

Jordan Hall scored the first 4 points of the seventh-grade game and finished with 14 points as the Jayhawks didn't have anyone who could match his size.
The Tigers led 6-0 after one quarter and then outscored Jayhawk 16-7 in the second. Fort Scott scored 10 straight to make it 16-4 with 3:15 to go. Carter Goldston hit a 3-point shot in the period.
Goldston and Alec Michaud hit back-to-back 3's at the end of the third quarter to make it 31-9.
Goldston added 10 points for the Tigers while Michaud finished with 7. Zach Nickelson was Jayhawk's leading scorer with 5 points.
Fort Scott outrebounded Jayhawk, 20-15. Hall led the Tigers with 4 rebounds.
The eighth-graders never trailed, leading 13-8 after one period. Jesse Lawrence gave the Tigers their biggest lead 15-8, a few seconds into the second quarter.
The lead was 21-16 at the half after Andrew Callahan scored with 35 seconds left. Fort Scott matched its biggest lead, 7 points, when Gunnar Brown took a turnover in for a layup to make it 27-20 with 2:05 left in the third.
Jayhawk was within 27-23 at the start of the fourth. They got within one point with 1:08 to go when Colton Byram made two free throws.
The Jayhawks got the ball back and called time out with 10 seconds to go. But Jonah Jones came up with a steal as time expired.
Callahan finished with 10 points and 6 rebounds for the Tigers. Brown added 9 points and Lawrence had 7 rebounds. Brandon Gray led Jayhawk with 11 points.
Fort Scott outrebounded Jayhawk, 30-25.
FSMS is scheduled to play Roosevelt Middle School today in Coffeyville. There will be only "A" games once again with the possibility of a "C" game added on which could have players from both grades (similar to how things were scheduled between the schools during the girls' season). Play is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
NOTES -- Due to one official not being able to make it, FSMS administrators took over the role in each game. Principal Danny Brown was the second official in the seventh-grade game and athletic director Tom Davis perfomed that role in the eighth-grade game....
