'Hounds 3-1 at Neosho County

CHANUTE -- Fort Scott Community College's volleyball team went 3-1 at the Neosho County Tournament here over the weekend.

Friday afternoon, the Greyhounds, an NJCAA Division II team, took on Seminole State, Okla., a Division I team, for the second time this season on the court and won 24-26, 25-17, 25-22, 25-14.

The Greyhounds were led by sophomore Stephanie De Hoyos, who tallied 16 kills and 14 digs. Uniontown sophomore Jacy Ermel had 11 kills and 18 digs, freshman Payton Hallford registered 10 kills and freshman setter Kortney Blaufuss put up 50 assists.

Fort Scott lost to Seminole State in their home tournament on August 24 but received a forfeit from the school a week later when the schools were supposed to meet at Seminole, Okla.

In the late match on Friday, the 'Hounds faced Allen for the third time this season and fell 25-18, 25-20, 20-25, 23-25, 15-10, in a hard-fought match. Leading the Greyhounds was freshman outside hitter Shelbey Baker with 20 kills and 15 digs. Sophomores Ermel and De Hoyos tallied 13 kills and 9 kills respectively. Blaufuss also dished out 53 assists in the match.

On Saturday, the Greyhounds put up two tallies in the win column, defeating the Oklahoma Baptist JV and Division I Pratt, each in 3-0 sweeps.

In the morning match versus OBU, Fort Scott won 25-14, 25-8, 25-19. Ermel and Dani Rubow each were credited with 9 kills, De Hoyos with 8 and Baker with 7. Ermel came up with 15 digs while freshman Terina Harris had 12. Blaufuss handed out 35 assists and served 5 aces.

The Greyhounds defeated Pratt, 25-22, 25-17, 25-7. De Hoyos had 15 kills and Ermel picked up 11. Baker had 14 digs, Harris 13 and Ermel 10. Blaufuss led the offense with 40 assists.

Earlier in the week, on Wednesday night, the Greyhounds fell to Butler, ranked 12th in NJCAA Division II, in three sets, 25-13, 25-20, 25-10. The match counted in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play and in seeding for post-season play.

De Hoyos had 10 kills for Fort Scott. Baker came up with 13 digs and Blaufuss handed out 26 assists.

The Greyhounds fell to 0-6 in the East and 1-6 in district matches with the loss. They had been winless in district but Hesston forfeited its victory over Fort Scott on September 4.

Overall, Fort Scott is 14-16 and takes that record in to Wednesday night's home match against Independence (0-7 East, 0-7 district, 3-21 overall). Play will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Arnold Arena.

Fort Scott also has a home match with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M at Arnold Arena Friday night at 6:30. This will be the fourth time the teams have met this season. The 'Hounds beat the Lady Norse in Miami on September 18 and at the Coffeyville Tournament October 4. NEO A&M picked up a win over Fort Scott at the Allen Tournament on September 21.

The NEO A&M match will be a non-conference, non-district match.
