Two finish in top five for Tiger girls at Pittsburg

PITTSBURG -- Fort Scott's Katren Rienbolt and Cassidy Westhoff led the way as the Tigers finished in fourth place at the Pittsburg Invitational here Thursday.

Rienbolt, the defending Class 4A State champion, won the event with a time of 16:01 over four kilometers, beating out Northeast's Kaylee Bogina, daughter of FSHS head coach Tracey Bogina, by 11 seconds.

Westhoff finished in fourth place with a time of 16:22, in between a pair of runners from Paola. Natalie Eppler was third in 16:18 and K.J. Kirk was fifth in 16:26.

Grace Willis turned in a time of 18:35 for the Tigers to finish 24th. Mallory Westhoff was 44th in 19:41 and Chelsie Monroe was 63rd in 21:40.

Having five in the race made the Tigers eligible for team scoring for the first time this season and they finished with 136 points. Paola won the team title with 46 points followed by Chanute with 98 and host Pittsburg with 122.

Wyatt Stark placed 10th for Fort Scott's varsity boys in a time of 18:06 over five kilometers. Garrett Tatro finished 28th in 19:31.

The only Uniontown entrants were in the boys' varsity race. Jonathan Wheeler turned in a time of 20.19 for 47th place. Dominik Dewhan ran 27:07 and Ryan Foldberg was 88th in 27:26.

Jamie Silrers of Paola was the winner in 16:50 with Chandler Summers of Chanute second in 17:36, just a whisker ahead of Pittsburg's Hank Cloninger, who was also recorded in 17:36.

Paola won the team title with 60 points followed by Pittsburg with 80 and Chanute with 128. Fort Scott and Uniontown were not eligible for team scoring.

Devin Brooks finished 12th in the 5K boys' junior varsity race with a time of 20:17 and Zach Ballou came in 22nd in 21:25. The winning time was 18:56 turned in by Erie's Aaron Yarnell.

There were five Tigers in the 4K girls' JV race but team scores were not kept. Claire Gorman performed the best of the group with a time of 22:10 for 23rd place. Kaylee Coombs was 35th in 23:19, Lily Zimmerman 37th in 23:24 and Kylie Bruner 38th in 23:24. Ashley Hughes finished 50th in 25:13.

The results were compiled with the times rounded up to the nearest second, so it's not known how truly close any times truly were.

Both Fort Scott and Uniontown have one race left before their respective league meets. The Tigers to go Independence Thursday and then onto the Southeast Kansas League Meet on October 17. The Eagles will be at Pleasanton next week before going on to the Burlington meet on the 17th. The teams of the Three Rivers League all go to Burlington and their results are sorted out from the rest of the competitors and schools for purposed of determining the league champions.
