Post 25 splits with Girard on road

Thursday, July 11, 2013

GIRARD -- Fort Scott American Legion Post 25 split a doubleheader with Girard here Tuesday night in the final outing of the regular season.

Girard won the opener 9-3. Fort Scott took the nightcap 13-1 in 3 innings. The second game was scheduled to go 5 innings before the run rule kicked in to stop things.

Fort Scott finished the regular season with a record of 14-8. Post 25 will be the No. 4 seed in the Kansas Amateur Baseball Association post-season tournament, which will be held Saturday and Sunday at Osawatomie. American Legion Zone Tournament play will take place the following weekend.

Fort Scott managed only single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings in the opener against Girard, which needed just 4 hits to produce its runs.

Jacob Bradbury and Alex Fink each went 2 for 3 at the plate for Post 25. Chase Brown, Wyatt Reehl and Kaleb DeLaTorre had the other hits for Fort Scott.

In game two, Fort Scott jumped out to an 8-0 lead after one inning. Benjamin Labbe was 2 for 2 with a triple while driving in 4 runs. Zach Denton was also 2 for 2, belting a double. Bradbury was 2 for 3.

Reehl pitched the first 2 innings for Fort Scott. He allowed 2 hits and no walks while striking out 2. Zach Denton threw the final inning, allowing 1 run on 2 hits and a walk.

The KABA was Fort Scott's league assignment during the regular season. The league includes Iola, Wellsville, Ottawa, Chanute, Garnett, Osawatomie, Burlington, West Franklin and Louisburg. Post 25 did not play West Franklin, which played just four league games. Chanute can not compete in the KABA Tournament because the Zone it was assigned to has decided to hold its tournament this weekend. This caused the KABA tourney schedule to undergo changes from what was published in Wednesday's Sports Calendar.

Iola, whose high-school team finished second in the Kansas Class 4A State Tournament this year, was undefeated in KABA play and will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament. Wellsville is the second seed followed by Ottawa, Garnett, Osawatomie, Burlington and Louisburg. Chanute finished fifth in the KABA and West Franklin was ninth.

The KABA Tournament begins at 10 a.m. Saturday with a first-round game between Iola (32-2 overall) and Louisburg (0-17 KABA, 5-17 overall). Fort Scott (10-6, 14-8) faces Garnett (6-8, 7-16) at 12:15. Wellsville (11-3, 14-3) battles Osawatomie (6-9, 7-11) at 2:30 p.m. And Ottawa (9-3, 18-9) will play Burlington (4-14, 7-19) at 5:45 to conclude the first round.

Two fields will be used Sunday as the losers go into a consolation bracket while the winners go into a single-elimination bracket. If Fort Scott loses Saturday, they'll face the Iola-Louisburg loser at 10 a.m. Sunday on Field 1. If Post 25 wins, they'll take on the Iola-Louisburg winner at the same time on Field 2.

The consolation bracket has the other semifinal at 12:15, the seventh-place game at 2:30 and the fifth-place game at 4:45 on Field 1. The championship bracket will have the Wellsville-Osawatomie and Ottawa-Burlington winners square off at 12:15 followed by the third-place game at 2:30 and the championship at 4:45 on Field 1.
