Community, contractors help others make storm repairs

Saturday, May 18, 2013

It appears as though several contractors are stepping up to help those in need after an early April hailstorm pelted Fort Scott, causing high-dollar damage throughout the city.

During Friday's regular county commission meeting, Bourbon County Emergency Manager Terri Coop updated commissioners on progress with the newly-formed recovery committee and also informed them what private contractors are doing to reach out and help.

Coop suggested that as a way of helping those who are helping others, commissioners could look into a system where those doing charitable work would receive a waiver from the fees at the landfill. She told commissioners the recovery committee could develop a plan of documentation for those who qualify for the waiver to avoid abuse of the waiver. Commissioners agreed that something could be worked out to waive the fees for certain qualified users.
