Officials see a 'busy' filing period

Saturday, June 2, 2012

With the filing deadline having passed at noon on Friday, hopefuls for everything from Bourbon County commissioners to town trustees are lining up.

Because redistricting is now being considered by the Kansas Supreme Court, the Aug. 7 primary date is in doubt and could possibly be moved to Aug. 28, Bourbon County Clerk Joanne Long said Friday.

The general election is scheduled for Nov. 6.

For offices subject to redistricting -- state representative, state senate, Kansas Board of Education and U.S. representative -- the filing deadline has been pushed back to noon June 11.

The county commission District 2 spot, currently held by Jingles Endicott, who is not running, will be contested on the Republican side by Robert Query, Kenny Clark and Barbara Albright.

Clyde K. Killion is the lone Democrat going for the position.

Incumbent County Commissioner District 3 Harold D. Coleman has filed for reelection.

Evelyn Taylor has filed for county clerk as a Democrat and Long and Kendell Dawn Mason will vie for the spot on the Republican side.

Incumbent Democrat Susan Quick and challenger Rhonda Dunn will face off for the county treasurer's job. And Sheriff Ronald L. Gray will face Democratic candidate Bob Jackson for that post.

Terri L. Johnson, incumbent, is running for county attorney.

"It's pretty busy," Long said. "There are only two that are uncontested at all."

Bourbon County has about 10,500 registered voters. Of those, 4,300 are Republican, 3,100 are Democrats and 3,300 are unaffiliated.

For Drywood Trustee, Darrell L. Bloomfield and David T. Klein have filed on the Republican side.

Dwayne Allen has filed for Drywood treasurer.
