Gymnastics team competes in league championship

The Fort Scott Twisters gymnastics club competed in the Kansas City league championships last weekend at Diamond Academy in Overland Park, Kan. There were three teams, competing at different levels, from Fort Scott at the meet.

The Level 1 team finished in third place, missing out on first place by 7/10ths of a point. The Level 3 team was third, missing second place by 0.45 points. The Level 3 team finished ninth.

The Level 1 team had nine competitors: Cynthia Garcia, Allee Sombatchaerun, Sarah Carr, Emily Lloyd, Kaitlyn Hardwick, Shalyn Crossland, Paige Morter, Mollie Umphenour and Lilly Nash.

Three girls earned the top spot in the all-around competition for their age groups. Garcia was the top performer in the 4-and-under age group. Carr won 8-and-up. Sombatchareun won her 6-and-up group with a combined score of 38.25, which was the second-highest of all participating gymnasts.

The Level 3 team had Aly Majors, Erin Camp, Mackenzie Coverdell and Isabella Lloyd. The Level 5 team had Makalya Lloyd, Reba Lloyd and Lauren Camp. The Twisters are coached by Daniel Young and Martha Lloyd.

Also of note, Natalie Leachner, granddaughter of Mike and Linda Leachner of Fort Scott, competed for a different team in Level 4, 9-and-up age group at this meet. She earned two first-place and two second-place finishes and had an all-around score of 37.85 (out of 40).
