Wright putback gives Tiger boys win

IOLA -- Fort Scott High's boys may have "out-miracled" Iola here Tuesday night.

In one of the rarest plays in basketball, Iola's Jerrik Sigg converted a 5-point play to put his team ahead by one point with 10.1 seconds left in the game. But Matt Wright's putback of a teammate's miss at the buzzer gave the Tigers a 45-44 victory in non-league play.

Sigg hit a 3-point shot to bring the Mustangs (5-4) within a point. He also drew a foul, which the officials ruled occurred after the shot. Since Iola was in the double bonus, Sigg was awarded two free throws. He made both to put Iola up 44-43.

The Tigers (6-2) brought the ball upcourt and called time out with 8.5 seconds left. On the ensuing play, Cameron Woodring drove for a layup but missed. Wright was there to give Fort Scott its 43rd consecutive victory over Iola.

Fort Scott struggled most of the first half, particularly in the second quarter. The Mustangs scored 12 straight points to take a 22-14 lead before Tyler Adams' 3-pointer cut the deficit to 5 going into the locker room.

The Tigers held Iola to 3 points in the third period. Fort Scott scored 15 of the first 16 to take a 32-23 lead. The Mustangs didn't score a field goal until less than a minute remained in the period.

In the fourth, the Tigers struggled to score field goals, going without one until Woodring made it 39-35 with less than two minutes remaining.

Adams led the Tigers with 12 points while Woodring finished with 10. Christian Kauth led Iola with 11 points and Sigg finished with 10.

The Tigers host Girard Friday at the FSHS gymnasium.
