City seeking zoning board and planning commission members

Friday, December 16, 2011

The city of Fort Scott has two immediate openings on the Fort Scott Planning Commission -- one for a city resident and one for a Bourbon County resident. The board meets on an as-needed basis.

The function of the planning commission is to review, adopt and update the city's comprehensive plan, establish zoning districts and allowable uses, review zoning regulations within the city and requests for special permits or conditional uses within certain zoning districts of Fort Scott, a news release said.

There is also an immediate opening for a city resident on the Board of Zoning Appeals. The board meets on an as-needed basis and the opening is for someone living within the city limits, the release said.

The function of the Board of Zoning Appeals is to review requests for variances in zoning ordinance such as building setback requirements, building sizes, etc. This is the only board within the city that can take action on its own.

Those with a desire to serve on the Planning Commission or Board of Zoning Appeals and meet the requirements should submit a letter of interest to the City Clerk. She will then submit your letter for consideration by the City Commission.

All the boards and commissions serve on a volunteer basis and are not compensated, the release said.

For more information, contact City Clerk Diane Clay at (620) 223-0550, or dclay@fscity.org. Deadline is Jan. 6.
