(1911)

It was thought that the boys of Fort Scott had gone the limit in Halloween jokes by throwing rocks through windows in two residences of the city, but the boys of Clay Center went them one better by trying to burn a bridge in that city. The fire was discovered before any great damage had been done.

The fire department was called to 923 East Pine Street this morning to extinguish a blaze that had been discovered in the residence of Sadie Leffer. No one has been at the Leffer home for a number of days and the manner in which the fire originated is a mystery. The fire was in a boarded-up basement and the damage amounted to nothing. Workmen in the Frisco yards saws the blaze and turned in the alarm.

In Fort Scott 36 YEARS AGO:

Workmen yesterday erected the poles which will hold the large screen on which the Monitor will display election returns. The screen will be placed on the south side of the Monitor office and will be erected so that everyone can see the returns as they are flashed on the canvas.

While the election returns are being reproduced on the canvas by the Monitor, Welland's concert band has been employed to furnish the music. They will play from the balcony of the Goodlander Hotel.

Fort Scott Juco 'Hounds all but cinched the interstate Conference championship last night by tearing up the defending champion Joplin Lions and garnering a 14-0 victory in the mud. This was Joplin's first Interstate Conference loss since 1956. Bill Van Cleave was the big gun in defense, as well as offense. He set up both Fort Scott touchdowns.
