City to start smoke testing

Friday, June 10, 2011

The city of Fort Scott will begin smoke testing the city's sanitary sewer system starting Monday morning. City officials said the testing crew will begin in the Fort Scott Industrial Park and make its way north toward the wastewater plant. The duration of the testing depends on the weather and could last all summer.

Officials said testing will focus on the city's main sewer line, which runs along Buck Run Creek and could affect businesses and residents within one block on either side of the line.

Testing sewers using smoke is a standard method and is perfectly safe and harmless, a news release said. The smoke used to test is odorless, non-toxic and will not stain and there is no fire associated with the smoke testing. The smoke used for this purpose will dissipate within a few minutes after it first appears.

To better prepare for this testing all residents and businesses are asked to do the following:

* Pour water in basement floor drains;

* Pour water in any unused or infrequently used sinks;

* Flush toilets.

Following these directions will ensure that all traps are full of water and limit the likelihood of smoke entering the building through the drains, the release said.

If smoke is noticed entering the building during the smoke testing, officials ask that the building's occupants remain calm as the smoke is not toxic. If smoke is seen in the building, follow the directions listed:

* Open doors and windows to ventilate the building;

* Note the area where the smoke is entering the building;

* Call Fort Scott City Hall at (620) 223-0550 to arrange for an inspection.

Prior to smoke testing, officials request building owners in the potential affected area to notify the city if any of the following conditions exist during testing hours:

* Dogs, cats or other animals that would be home alone;

* Any individuals that may be alone or frightened by the smoke;

* Any individuals with respiratory issues who may be in the building.

For more information, or to notify the city of any of the aforementioned situations, contact City Hall at (620) 223-0550.
