Coffman runner-up in 1A pole vault

Pleasanton sophomore Preston Coffman finished in second place in pole vault at the Kansas Class 1A State Track and Field Championships in Wichita Saturday.

Coffman, a first-time competitor, cleared 13 feet, 6 inches. Brady Tien, a senior from Logan who finished third in this event last year, won the event with a mark of 14' 6".

Blu-Jay athletes won three more medals Saturday. Sophomore Lindsey Conn took fifth in the 200-meter dash in 26.90 seconds. Senior Taylor Kisner of Victoria, third last year, was the winner in 29.95. Conn was also fifth in the 400 in 1:02.87. Kisner was also the winner in this race in 59.57.

Conn was unable to win a third medal Saturday as she finished with the 11th-best preliminary time in the 100 meters in 13.52. Freshman Brittanie Marshall was 13th in 13.64.

Sophomore Hannah Streeter tied for seventh in girls' pole vault. Five girls each cleared 5 feet even. Then going by those who needed fewer attempts to clear the bar, Dyna Shaw of Wheatland was placed fourth, Katelynn Slattery of Spearville fifth, Kayla Zerr of Quinter sixth and Streeter and Cassidy Husling of Baileyville tied for seventh.

Sophomore Karesa Lewis missed a medal by one spot after she finished eighth in the finals of the 300-meter hurdles in 50.70 seconds. South Barber senior Erin Merklein, second in the event last year, was this year's winner in 46.02, winning by 2.17 seconds.

Senior Reid Hein finished 11th in boys' shot put with a best effort of 42 feet even. Clifton-Clyde senior Tyler Lambert, third here last year, was the winner at 52' 4".

Pleasanton's girls 4x800-meter relay team finished 16th in 11:42.56. Hoxie was the winner in 10:06.42.

Olpe, last year's Class 2A girls' champion, won this year's 1A title while Centralia won the boys' title, its first.
