Sauerwein wins raffle; auction raises $14,000

Marlan Sauerwein, Ed Sauerwein and Fort Scott Presbyterian Village Executive Director Ginger Dierksen pose for a photo shortly after Ed was presented with a Caribbean cruise he won in a raffle.

Many thanks to the citizens of Fort Scott and the surrounding area for the strong support of Presbyterian Village's Annual Dinner and Auction on May 12.

"All of the proceeds directly benefit tenants at Fort Scott Presbyterian Village," said Executive Director Ginger Dierksen.

The annual dinner and auction is the largest fundraiser for the Village's Good Samaritan Fund, which helps tenants who have outlived their financial resources.

"The sponsorships and ticket sales made all the difference this year," Dierksen said. "Area business contributions filled in for fewer auction items, making our totals about the same over the last few years."

The event included a chicken dinner, live and silent auctions, a drawing for a cruise and entertainment.

Volunteers rose to the occasion as many Fort Scott citizens worked hard doing such things as selling tickets, helping in the drive-through, parking cars, auctioneering, baking cakes, cleaning tables and much more, all to support the mission of the Presbyterian Manor organization.

"We can't thank the sponsors and volunteers enough," Dierksen said. "We couldn't make such a successful event happen without them. Their commitment level and belief in the mission of the Presbyterian Manor organization really shows."

The Village raised just over $14,000.

"I believe events such as this help the community to learn about the need that our seniors sometimes face when they outlive their financial resources," Dierksen said.

If a person was not able to come to the event or donate at that time, they may make a donation at a later time when it fits within their personal budget better, she said.

"The important thing to remember is that we are all winners from this event. Every one of us wins by being able to say that we made a major impact in the lives of our seniors who have, or who may in the future, outlive their financial resources. Think about the worry that they feel knowing they are almost out of money and the relief that this must give them to know that we will continue to care for them regardless of their ability to pay in a loving, Christian environment. I feel like I win every day when I live in a community with such great people who step up and do the right thing every time it's needed. Thank you to everyone; you are all so very much appreciated."

Local resident Ed Sauerwein won the Caribbean cruise for two. Ed has never been on a cruise before and is excited to have the opportunity. Ed said his dad was always lucky to win raffles, and he thought he'd just take a chance this year because he was in support of the cause at Presbyterian Village. His mother, Marlan Sauerwein, is a village tenant.
