UNIONTOWN, Kan. -- Uniontown's softball team came back from being on the wrong end of a first-game rout to salvage a split with Hum-boldt in a non-league softball doubleheader here Thursday.

The Cubs scored 9 of their runs in the seventh inning as they beat Uniontown 16-1 in the opener. The Eagles (13-5) took the second game 8-7.

"The first game got away from us," Uniontown head coach Alan Shinn said. "We made mistakes and Humboldt took advantage of them."

The Cubs cranked out 22 hits in the opener while Uniontown had just 8. Taylor Wade and Jessie Camac had 2 each.

A storm front passed through town during the first inning of the second game resulting in 12 total runs. At the end of the inning, Uniontown led 7-5.

Humboldt added single runs in the second and fifth to tie the score. Uniontown scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.

"We played a lot better than we did in the first game," Shinn said. "I'm proud of the way the girls put the first game behind them."

Mandie Ridge, making her first varsity start, allowed 8 hits and 5 runs while striking out 2.

Ridge, Tayler Shook, Hope Jurgensen and Lakyn Coyan each had 2 of Uniontown's 12 hits. Both of Jurgensen's were doubles.

Uniontown concludes regular-season play with a Three Rivers League doubleheader at Chetopa Monday.
