Mayor proclaims March as Red Cross Month

Friday, March 4, 2011

Mayor Richard Hedges recently signed a proclamation recognizing March as American Red Cross Month in Fort Scott, a tradition dating back to 1943, when President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the first such declaration.

Throughout the month of March, more than 700 Red Cross chapters and blood regions nationwide will celebrate with special events, training and fundraisers that give the public a chance to learn more about the agency and ways they can get involved, a news release said.

"The Red Cross wants to thank Mayor Hedges and all the Fort Scott City Commission members for supporting us, and for issuing this proclamation in honor of March as Red Cross Month," said Whendi Martin, Bourbon County American Red Cross Chapter executive director. "We are proud to be the place where everyday people can do extraordinary things, and we hope our entire community will continue to support us so that we can continue offering lifesaving services every day."
